Welcome to Wcomm

Welcome to Wcomm E-Chapter, devoted to alumnae and alumni interested in all sorts of communication:  speech, journalism, public relations, online communication gurus — whether you majored in it, have taught it, do it, think you want to do it.

The Wcomm E-Chapter’s list is wcomm@msfirstalumnae.com.

While e-chapters are fluid, we may want to take on a project or undertaking so that we will be able to make a report at the annual meeting demonstrating that we are a viable chapter.  I am open to suggestions.  I have some initial thoughts for consideration:

(1) each member takes a month and posts a helpful hint for some genre of communication;

(2) we mentor student(s) in communication at the W;

(3) we meet on line at a certain time every other month (chat room style).

These suggestions may be too rigid but my concern is that we need to look viable or be discounted.

Please share your thoughts!

Your temporary e-chapter representative pending Jimmie’s surgery,

Lydia Quarles

    This is great, Lydia. Who all is in the group?

      I don’t know. I just thought that a place to go would help us get organized. LQ

    I’m in the group! :) The new blog is wonderful. I like suggestion number one. It would take the pressure off having to post on a regular basis, which might not work for everyone’s schedule.

      Brandie, I think that might be a decent idea as well. We’d need to figure out a way to have a chat room; but we can figure that out somehow (or someone can) — google probably has a google-chat mechanism somewhere. I also think that we need a project so that we can say “this is what we did….we are a real chapter”. I am afraid that the “administration” will want to discount our chapters.

      Thanks for the email about MS. Are you interested in joining the single-sex research chapter? LQ

        I signed up earlier today!

      Brandy, I realize that I mis-read your post. I prefer #1 myself. We all have crazy schedules anyway, but if we just volunteered to write a little tip that was posted sometime during the month, I think that would work fine. LQ

    I’m here and would love to blog if I knew something to blog about!

      Jill, how about brainstorming with yourself about a suitable project for this chapter? LQ

        Is brainstorming with myself anything like a lawyer who represents herself??? (For those not in the “know”, a lawyer who represents herself has a fool for a client.) I hate it when people make obscure references that I don’t understand

    I have no problem with #1 either, but it may be best to begin in the Fall. I know my schedule is going to be super crazy this summer, but I will be back at work in September and I hope new baby and I will have a routine working at that point.

    The chat room idea may is great but may be more challenging to get up and running at first.

    I love this idea. I don’t have a lot of time to be involved in a local chapter. I would be happy to try to post something this summer but we are expecting our second baby in September so I’m afraid things will get a bit hectic for me this fall. I’m really interested in hearing some tips and ideas from other alumni too.
